If you're using the traditional tape scanner algorithm, Amanda will simply use whatever it happens to think is best.

You may have to do what you say but I notice in:

  http://wiki.zmanda.com/man/amanda-taperscan.7.html

Or man amanda-taperscan (man 7 amanda-taperscan) on a machine it's installed shows how to force it to use a more 'lexical' ordering. Note it says LEXICAL not numeric, so you may get 1, 10, 11, 2, 3, 4 :)
