But much of the success of Linux and open source in general is through
people being part of an online, virtual community.

I can make judgements about the management skills of members active
in Linux Australia even though I have never met them, just as I can
make judgements and work with programmers around the world who I have
never met.

Unfortunately it can take time and effort to make such judgements.
For many, that time and effort is probably had to come by.
