Sadly, I think it was more than that.  CALU was cheap and cheerful
and affordable from my own resources, with every presentation aimed
at stuff i was interested in.  AUUG was a hugely expensive conference
aimed at the suits.

I know you've done more than most to change AUUG back to its
roots. But I think AUUG lost something just as CALU appeared
(or conversely, AUUG's blip in lacking an appealling and
affordable technical stream allowed CALU to be more than a one-off).

Like you, I'm sure there room for a suit conference and a
technical conference.  But it wouldn't shock me if one of
the commercial firms ended up being the supplier to the suits.
