September. Enough after LCA for me to have a sleep. Not too close to AUUG 2005 (a month away, but a different audience), not too close to LCA 2006 (and again a different demographic). Open to negotiation though.

How does the timing relate to the academic year?

One of the aspects of the previous January timing of the ALC (Australian Linux Conference), was that January occurred before the start of the Australian academic year, so that it would both be when tertiary students would be available to attend, and, be when on-campus university accommodation was available between teaching weeks, for accommodating conference attendees.

Dunno... One of the problems is that the only time the academic year only really aligns at the end of the year, and organizing things around then is a lot harder (people shut down for Christmas, don't want to go to an event in December, have office parties, want to spend time with the kids, etc). September is early enough to hot hurt people's exam study, but not too close to a possible January LCA.

You need to remember it's only a weekend as well, so Perth people could fly in Friday arvo / night, and fly back Sunday night (perhaps, I haven't checked the flight schedual).

Cheers,
Mikal
