All,
Possible alternative: Get to Rockhampton somehow and take one of two daily 1:20 Greyhound busses down? $50-ish one way.

One is the fact that there is an amazing quantity of roadworks going on with choke points, speed restrictions (down to 40km/h), temporary traffic lights and general mayhem around all of that activity. The other is that it's a very busy route for heavy haulage trucking with more semi trailers and B-Doubles per kilometre than I have seen in years. And many of the big truck drivers are VERY impatient.

So don't expect a particularly relaxing drive if you choose to take on the Bruce Highway.

You need to leave the arrivals area, go up either a lift or a moving walkway to an overpass in the sky, traverse to a three storey car park, get a lift to the ground floor, then find the particular hire car company you have booked through. And on the way back, you need to know that you have to take the International Airport exit from Airport Drive to find the Service Centre to refuel your hire car before then heading to the domestic airport Car Rental Return area.
