I couldn't get the unicode headers to work. The database I use is MySQL, 
and it seems to store these characters just fine.

I found a way to work around this: all these messages are error messages 
output to the xhtml page, so I converted all these strings using 
htmlentities(), and then just ouput this to the page, and the characters 
are now showing just fine!
