[LCP]linux installation problem

hi
can any one help me sort out this linux installation problem plz?

i have a Intel 850MV P4 1.6, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HD.  I tried to install linux 
6.1 and then 6.2..  both the attemps failed.. the process goes upto 
partitioning, etc, but hangs just at the screen which shows the file copy 
progress bar.  nither workstation nor server setup helps doing..
later on i also tried installing NT 4 which also hangs after restarting the 
computer.  only win 98 and mellinium seem to work.
