This doesn't have to be the case. If you use 1password, passkeys can be
saved to 1password, on mobile and browser. Both Firefox and Chromium
based browsers supported (and probably others too) including on Linux.

Sure 1password is proprietary. But the fact it can do it would seem to
indicate that it should be possible to do the same thing with open
source software too. No idea if any open source software supports this.
