[Linux-aus] LA Name Change - the process

With all respect, I'm at the point where I wish this discussion was over already so we can focus on doing awesome things with the organisation again, whatever it's called. This is taking *way* too much of our respective energies up.

Can I vote we leave the decision on this up to our elected council? I believe all differing opinions on this have already been more than sufficiently represented.

Donna,

I am yet to hear a reasonable argument as to WHY we need a name change.

I am afraid that "Sponsors wont sponsor PyCon because Linux Australia is the
name of the organisation behind it" completely fails to hold water for me.

It is perfectly normal, and indeed very very common for the name of the
company/organisation/whatever behind an event to have absolutely nothing to
do with the name of said event. If a potential sponsor sees the association
of the event with Linux Australia as some negative factor then I question if
the potential sponsor is a sponsor we even really want. I just can't see how
having Linux Australia as the name behind anything can have a negative
impact. If for some inexplicable reason it is an negative influence, how
about we leave Linux Australia alone, register some business names that are
more relevant to any particular event and then use those as the
public/trading name behind the event?

For example, to steal Arjen's idea - "FOSCAN - A Linux Australia
Initiative"

Linux Australia is an extremely valuable brand, and I firmly believe that
this proposed name change can do nothing but devalue the brand.

My comments and opinions in no way are intended to impugn any of the people
that give freely and generously of their time however I truly do believe
that with this particular proposal they are heading entirely down the wrong
track.

Have a great weekend!!

Gary

I find the veiled accusations against the current council of committed
volunteers really disheartening. :(

Assuming these people are working in bad faith against the organisation and
the community seems pretty unfair.
