Did they have a price for putting them in a printed cardboard envelope?

Mike Carden showed me a disk he'd picked up from the Perth Linux Users Group
that they did for SFD 2007. It had a great cardboard sleeve with helpful
instructions, plenty of information, and it was neatly recyclable too.

| As for quantities, I think we'd be nuts if we order over 5,000. There's only
| so many discs you can get rid of within a day, and if you're just spamming
| people AOL-style you're not really doing your job in explaining FOSS.

OK, so Sydney orders 5,000. Canberra orders 5,000. Brisbane, Adelaide,
Melbourne, and Hobart order 5,000. Bathurst, Limestone Coast, Newcastle and
Westall Secondary College in Melbourne, being smaller groups, order 2,500
each. That's 40,000 right there. If there were other groups that hadn't
registered their locations on the Software Freedom Day map (that I used just
then to get the above list of groups), or if the New Zealand groups (four of
them) asked to buy in, then that'd be approaching 50,000. Then consider that
these disks can be used any time of the year, for any event, and 50,000 to me
sounds like aiming on the low side.

If you mean 5,000 for the entirety of Australia, then, frankly, I think you're
aiming way too low.

I do think it's important to make sure we give quality rather than quality -
i.e. give to people that are going to use it rather than just handing them out
randomly on street corners. We've found that running the SFD stand at a
computer fair, where there's plenty of people going by and they're pretty much
all interested in computer stuff, works really well. It's hard to measure,
though, of course. We intend to run an Install Fest the next week to see if
we can convert some of that interest into real change. But even then we can
give away 5,000 CDs without breaking a sweat.

Repeating myself, will stop now.

Have fun,

Paul
