On one hand, telegraphing it may have been legally unhelpful.

On the other hand, there are (were) probably ways to drop a widespread 
and very broad hint, perhaps along the lines of "iLaw will make a legal 
announcement shortly which will be of interest to the Open Source 
community, watch this space" and a link to a nondescript URL such as 
http://www.ilaw.com.au/ltea.html (you'd have to be a genius to be sure 
that "LTEA" meant "Linux Trademark Establishment in Australia" 
beforehand) and then replace it with a real page once the emails were 
rolling out.

On the gripping hand, IANAL.
