FWIW, I'd recommend taking the money back offer, and replacing the
scanner with one that's known to work with both SANE and Vuescan
(www.hamrick.com). 

Vuescan compatibility gives you a backstop in case the SANE doesn't work
to your expectations. It's cross-platform and very effective in my
experience (1x flatbed, 1x slide scanner) It is pay-ware though.

'corse, you should have done this in the beginning... Would you buy a
printer without checking that it will work with your chosen OS? :)
