Is anyone on list making extensive use of openldap in a school 
environment?

If so, what schemas, and admin tools do they recommend?

It seems like skolelinux uses webmin and ldap but I have yet to 
get the ISO and check it out.

I did attempt to write a simple to use web based admin tool 
aimed at the receptionist level but my previous employer owns 
the code so I need to decide whether to rewrite or modify 
something that already exists.
