Once you are in a channel this is simplified. You do not need to use
commands although you can...

For eg to msg a user privately you could do:

/msg kylie hello there 

Or you could right click the users name in the channel list and select
"open dialog window" 

Another one is action stuff:-

/me waves prints kylie waves in the channel or window one is chatting
into.
