I use Windows Live email on my mac/linux machines already. Aside from a
cross-platform HTML interface, they support POP and SMTP.

I've altered the subject to be less misleading - Windows Live Essentials is
only needed for the Photo Gallery and Movie Maker, not for accessing email.
