My two thoughts:

Older CD's aren't a problem.  All you need is to print a sleeve of
some sort for the CD Case outlining that some software may be a little
out of date, and that the latest version of the softwrae is available
form the developer's websites.  You can then have a listing of the
software on the CD on the sleeve, and the website where it can be
downloaded from (a-la track listing for music CD's).  Sleeves can be
updated (and easily re-printed) on a per-year basis, leaving the CD
artwork itself generic.

As for the gold coin charge for CD's, I'd like to nix that idea in
favour of a gold coin donation to cover the costs of printing.  Just
have a Jar labelled "Donations to cover the cots of CD duplication"
and people will donate as they'll feel it's for a good cause.  Asking
to charge for the CD will cause a lot iof people to turn away,.

Just my opinions.
