Part-Time Linux System Adminis, Part Time

We are a small IT company located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs with a strong commitment to Open Source Software. To support and improve our IT infrastructure we are looking for a part-time casual System Administrator and Support Person.

Remuneration will be between 25 AUD and 30 AUD per hour depending on the applicant's skills. This rate applies during extended business hours, i.e. Mon - Fri, 8am - 8pm. Work done outside these hours will attract an additional 5 AUD bonus per hour. The vast majority of work will happen during normal business hours, i.e. Mon - Fri, 9am - 5.30pm. The normal number of hours per week is 12; this number may be as low as 8 but also considerably higher, depending on requirements.

Our server infrastructure runs purely on Debian GNU/Linux - and so does an increasing number of our PCs. However, as some PCs (in particular laptops) are still running Windows, support for Windows will also have to be provided.

The position comprises periodic tasks like backup, software updates, hardware maintenance, bug fixing and general trouble shooting as well as improving existing and adding new services to our infrastructure.

Please consider applying for this versatile position in a friendly and open environment if you have at least some of the following skills:

Good knowledge in GNU/Linux system administration (preferably Debian) including Samba and Apache (Postgres would be a plus).

Functional knowledge of TCP/IP networking including iptables-based firewalling, DHCP and DNS.

Good communication skills, both internally and also externally with the community (mailing lists, file bug reports, submit patches,...).

Active knowledge in Bash scripting, passive knowledge in Perl (at least passive or, even better, active knowledge in PHP would be a plus).

Your flexibility, diligence, attention to detail and commitment to documenting changes will be much appreciated in this role.

Finally, there is an opportunity to be coached in Debian package creation and maintenance by a soon to be Debian developer.
