A good distro-agnostic, general purpose reference for all things Linux
administration is O'Reilly's

"LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell"

... which isn't small at almost 1000 pages. It's intended as preparation for the
LPIC 1 and 2 exams but almost all of it would apply to any distro.

"Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software" by the "Gang of
Four" (Gamma, Helm, Johnson and Vlissides) is a true classic, as is

"Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture" by Martin Fowler

Both books try to be as language agnostic as possible (but use mainly Java and
C++ examples), but I'm not sure how much general appeal they'd have. Still,
they're pretty much the foundation of design patterns in object-oriented programming.
