Hi
Fonts can be installed by creating the directory / usr/ share/
fonts/true type and copying the fonts to that directory. We have
contacted yolngu section at CDU and we have access to Yolngu fonts.
I worked with the linguist who developed and has access to the
materials related to the Indigenous Picture Dictionaries published by
IAD. Many Aboriginal languages have hard copy readers and we just need
to digitise it, connect to the sounds, videos, music and add a set of
learning activities
Using the materials from the Yipirinya school is a great idea
I would like to see developing a simplified working prototype as soon
as possible as a priority. This will allow me to load it on XO and
test it with the children. I would like to see it as a children's
project and the comments from them are essential. Once we have a
simplified prototype we can use it to involve other agencies like CDU,
IDA, DET and build on it.
10 years ago in the Kimberley we had a $60K grant and we had
Aboriginal artists painting illustrations, elders recording videos
explaining their flora and fauna, dancing, dreamtime stories related
to the place. We used the Macromedia Director to develop learning
activities.
As we have no funding we can ask DET or Yipirinya Aboriginal teachers,
Yirrara or CDU indigenous students to provide audio for free. I have
many audio files with Aboriginal words.
With Python as a primary tool, later on, people who have the skills
can transfer it to Flash or other platforms.
