[lca-announce] details for delegates
linux.conf.au 2005 update 2005-03-30
------------------------------------
Less than three weeks to go until the conference.
Though you know this already I feel I should remind you, Linux, notably
Linux in Australia is doing good things. One example of this, with three
weeks to go before linux.conf.au we sold our last remaining seat at the
conference. This means 500 Linux devotees and speakers are all converging on
Canberra next week for the best Linux event in the Southern Hemisphere.
With the conference less than a week away, we thought we should give you
some orientation information for when you get here, to help you find your
way to the Manning Clark Centre. Once you've registered, you will receive
your bag of schwag, which will include the conference handbook, and answer
further questions you may have and some we include below.
This email contains the following information
* If you missed out on lca2005
* Directions to the conference venue - Manning Clark Centre
* Emergency contact telephone number
* Important note regarding delegate badges
* lca2005 registration check-in
* how to recognise a helper or organiser
* lca2005 program
* A reminder about the keysigning
* Current weather conditions
* network coverage - or how do I get my email fix
* miniconfs - two extra days of cool stuff
* OCG Co-Conference - Open Source in Government
* bike ride - wind down after lca with an easy bicycle ride
* hackfest - get coding
* lightning talks and posters - everyone can participate
------------------------------
> If you missed out on lca2005
------------------------------
We apologise we were limited with numbers. There was a waiting list set up
for people who contacted us asking, so far we have been able to refund a few
places from people who have had to cancel their attendance and let a few
people in from the waiting list. Send email to
registrations@lca2005.linux.org.au if you feel you must be placed on the
waiting list. We make no guarantees that there will be any more places at
any time. My suggestion is that you get in early when the registrations for
linux.conf.au 2006 in New Zealand open.
------------------------------------
> Directions to the conference venue
------------------------------------
Where is the Manning Clarke Centre, directions from all over the place.
The MCC is building 26a, and can be found at
http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/displaymap.asp?grid=gh32
How do I get to the Manning Clark Centre from Burgmann College?
Burgman College is building 52 on
http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/displaymap.asp?grid=cd54
Walk out of the college onto Daley Road and turn left. Take the right fork
onto Sullivan's Creek Road. Keep walking. You should pass the Hancock
Library on your left and there will be a zebra crossing across Sullivan's
Creek road to a bridge over Sullivan's Creek. Walk over this bridge and
follow the path along the rear of the Chifley Library (with Fellows Oval on
your right). Take a left turn past the entrance to the Chifley Library,
keeping the A.D. Hope building to your right and you should see a ramp
leading up to the Manning Clark Centre.
How do I get to the Manning Clark Centre from the City (a.k.a. Civic)?
Assuming you will be entering the campus via University Avenue, walk down
the pathway keeping the Copland Building (building 24 on
http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/displaymap.asp?grid=cd32) on your right, until
you reach the University Union Building (building 20) and hang a right up
the ramp to the Manning Clark Centre.
How do I get to the Manning Clark Centre from University House?
University House is building 1 on
http://campusmap.anu.edu.au/displaymap.asp?grid=cd32
Walk along Liversidge Street until you come to Ellery Crescent. Follow it to
the left, until it reaches a cul de sac outside Melville Hall (on your
left). This will lead you onto the same path beside the Copland Building
referred to in the directions from Civic above.
------------------------------------------------
> Emergency telephone contact for the conference
------------------------------------------------
If you absolutely must get hold of an organiser, ring 6125 8186 (that's 61 2
+6125 8186) and it will divert to an organiser, who will try their best
to help you (with directions for example). Remember, needing a hug is not
worthy of getting an organiser out of bed. This number will reach an
organiser 24 hours a day for the duration of the conference.
------------------------------------------
> Delegate badges, more precious than gold
------------------------------------------
As you may have already learned, linux.conf.au has sold out quite a few
weeks before the conference. Because of venue restrictions, numbers are
strictly limited to 500. To ensure this, we will be checking delegate badges
throughout the conference. Make sure you wear yours at all times and do not
lose it. We will be charging a replacement fee of $50 to replace delegate
badges (after sighting satisfactory identification). Anyone found not
wearing a badge at the venue will be asked to leave.
Your badge is also your ticket to the conference dinner and the professional
delegates networking session (if you your registration includes these) and
provides discounts at one or two places on campus.
-------------------------------
> lca2005 registration check in
-------------------------------
As detailed on the program, conference check in is in the Manning Clarke
centre from 3pm on Sunday, from 8:30am Monday and Tuesday and from 8am On
Wednesday. Please register in person and pick up your delegate schwag as
soon as possible once you arrive at the conference. The above warning about
Delegate badges will hopefully explain why this is necessary.
----------------------------------------
> How to recognise a helper or organiser
----------------------------------------
Conference helpers will be wearing an lca2005 t-shirt in Yellow, Organisers
will be wearing Purple t-shirts. Helpers should know who to direct you to
for asking more specific questions and be able to give you directions around
the venue.
-----------------
> lca2005 program
-----------------
You will receive copies of the Conference Program for Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday and Saturday with your registration bag upon check in. If you are
attending a miniconf please visit their website and bring with you any
appropriate materials. You can view the current conference program at any
time at http://lca2005.linux.org.au/program.php
------------
> Keysigning
------------
If you are interested in taking part in the GPG keysigning party at LCA make
sure you submit your public key prior to Friday 15th. More information and
instructions on how to submit your key can be found at
http://www.keysigning.org/event/lca2005
---------
> Weather
---------
If you're wondering what to pack, currently it is a bit unseasonably warm,
with maximums in the mid to high 20 degrees (Celsius). There is rain
forecast for Friday, which may drop the temperature back a bit next week, so
you might want to bring a mixture of summer-type clothes (i.e. shorts and
t-shirt type stuff) and slightly warmer clothes (i.e. jeans, jumper).
------------------------------------------------
> Network coverage, or how to get your email fix
------------------------------------------------
The ANU campus wireless network will be available for use by conference
delegates 24 hours a day in all conference venues and in some other areas
around campus. Username and Password login via a web form will enable you to
access the Internet. You will be given a username and password to use at
registration.
There will be a terminal room with a variety of machines running Linux on
which you can sit down and log on for further network access. Also, switches
will be made available in the lounging area in the Manning Clarke Foyer. All
other network details will be provided via DHCP.
-----------
> Miniconfs
-----------
For all those of you attending the miniconfs remember to check their
websites for program changes or other news related to the miniconfs you wish
to attend.
Check their websites if you are attending
* Audio Miniconf - http://www.metadecks.org/events/lca2005/ Also the
- Audio Minconf crew asked me to pass on the following
notice
The Audio Miniconf Crew are organising a night of linux based
entertainment: audio/visual computer music etc. at the "Toast Cafe
and Bar" on the 19th of April.
It's a reasonable size venue, can hold 180 people. The format of
the night will be basically a series of short (20 minute) sessions
given by the linux audioconf participants, (and perhaps anyone
else we find who is doing cool sound stuff with linux). Later on
in the night will be some more "improvised" jamming. It should
provide for some interesting conversation/entertainment.
Details: Tuesday night April 19th, from 8pm, at Toast Cafe & Bar,
219 London Circuit, Canberra, ph. 6230 0003.
Directions: Up the stairs above Electric Shadows Cinema, Alinga
Street Civic

the same time. There will be some Government open source initiatives
announced and discussed at this conference. The program is online at and
registrations (separate to lca2005)

event at http://www.auug.org.au/events/2005/ocg/registration.html
-----------
> Bike ride
-----------
Anyone who knows me probably realises I was keen to involve cycling into
linux.conf.au in some manner. We have done it, Rusty and Tridge told our
crew of the OLS Bike ride and suggested we have an lca bike ride. So we have
one on the Sunday following the conference. Tridge, myself and various
speakers will be along for a gentle ride around Canberra to wind down and
see some of the city we held the conference in.
The ride is open to all delegates at the conference, meet at 10am in front
of the Manning Clarke Centre with a bike, we plan to leave by 10:30am and
ride for approximately 2 hours. There are some bike hire places in Canberra
if you are unable to arrange a bike, further information is available at the
registration desk during the conference.
----------
> Hackfest
----------
Don't forget the Hackfest, pit your coding ability against other delegates
for the glory, and possibly for the cool prize. More details at

-------------------------------------
> Poster displays and lightning talks
-------------------------------------
If you too want to participate in linux.conf.au and present something to the
community it is not too late. For details see the email:
