Have a look at valgrind (GPL): it is not quite stable yet, but it is
already pretty well usable, and does really look as the equivalent of
Purify for Linux x86:

   http://developer.kde.org/~sewardj

It seems that people at KDE and Mozilla are already using it to check
for leaks and incorrect memory accesses.
