Probably not :)
I've never actually studied in detail what ldconfig does, but
I found it creates links like if it did:
ln -s libfoo.so.1.6.1 libfoo.so.1
Maybe that's something else, maybe called as a side job by ldconfig ?
You are right about the cache too.
I don't have the man page here (at work on win32, and Cygwin does
not have ldconfig) and web access to man pages seem to be out for
the moment, or I'd have checked the man, but I think you are right.
