    Well, I was confused too when i faced the question due to lack of
    context, but then the context in the interview changed some thing
    like this...  a program using standard library functions or a
    program using unix system calls... Say for example, we want to split
    a file into n equal files... now which one will be faster... a
    program using standard library functions or the one using unix
    system calls... this is all the data i was given.
