From contact at everythingopen.au Mon Jun 3 21:48:41 2024 From: contact at everythingopen.au (Everything Open) Date: Mon, 03 Jun 2024 21:48:41 +1000 Subject: [Linux-aus] Announcing Everything Open 2025 Message-ID: <7149ef70e298130924014c21eadbcb49@everythingopen.au> Linux Australia is pleased to announce that Everything Open will be be held in Adelaide, Australia from January 20-22 2025. Everything Open is a grassroots conference with a focus on open technologies, the community that has built up around this movement and the values that it represents. The presentations will cover a broad range of subject areas including Linux, open source software, open hardware, open data, open government, and open GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), to name a few. As we have come to expect, there will be technical deep-dives into specific topics from project contributors, as well as tutorials on building hardware or using a piece of software, not to mention talks covering the inner workings of our communities. This is the first time the conference, as either linux.conf.au or Everything Open, has returned to Adelaide in 20 years. With its vibrant maker community, Linux Australia is excited to once again bring a series of world-class presentations to the South Australian capital. The three day conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre will have presentations on a range of open technologies topics from community members and project leaders. ## Join the Team As we start preparing in earnest, we need to expand our organising team. We have a number of roles that are needed to make the conference a success, including but not limited to: *Communications officer *Event coordinator *Treasurer *Speaker liaison *Sponsorship coordinator *Volunteer coordinator While being based in Adelaide or nearby is beneficial, it is not a requirement for being a part of the team. We also recognise that you may not have been involved in running a conference before, so we have guides and experienced people to help you along the way. Interested? We want to hear from you! Please reach out to us at contact at everythingopen.au and let us know you would like to be involved. As usual we will also open a Call for Volunteers for people to assist during the week of the conference, which will come out later this year. ## Call for Sessions The Everything Open 2025 Call for Sessions will open in late June 2024. We encourage you to start thinking about talks and tutorials to present at the conference, ready to submit a proposal once the dashboard opens. ## Sponsorship opportunities We have a wide range of sponsorship opportunities available. In addition to sponsoring the conference overall, there are a number of opportunities to contribute towards specific parts of the event. If you or your organisation is interested in sponsoring Everything Open, please get in touch. ## Stay in the know Subscribe to our announcement mailing list and follow our social channels to be the first to know about ticket sales, keynote speakers and conference highlights. * Mailing list -? https://lists.linux.org.au/mailman/listinfo/eo-announce * Twitter -? https://twitter.com/_everythingopen * LinkedIn -? https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/everythingopen/ * Conference website -? https://2023.everythingopen.au/ From president at linux.org.au Wed Jun 5 19:36:36 2024 From: president at linux.org.au (Linux Australia President) Date: Wed, 05 Jun 2024 19:36:36 +1000 Subject: [Linux-aus] Proposed changes to Linux Australia Grants Policy Message-ID: Dear community, Each year Linux Australia offers a Grants Program, with funding available for community members and groups to assist with the development and promotion of open technologies within Australasia. As flagged at our AGM at the beginning of the year, we are looking to improve how we track the success of grants that we give out, especially around the purchase of hardware for use with improving compatibility for open source software. This is an area that we currently find difficult to assess, and something that we wish to improve to ensure we continue to offer grants equitably across our community. The Linux Australia Council has come up with some proposed changes to our Grants Guidelines. Our existing guidelines can now be found on GitHub at https://github.com/linuxaustralia/constitution_and_policies/blob/master/guidelines_for_grant_submissions.md The proposed changes are available for review and feedback at https://github.com/linuxaustralia/constitution_and_policies/pull/46. We encourage people to review this and provide feedback via the pull request over the coming week. Our aim is to complete adjustments to the Grant Guidelines by Friday 14 June, and then open our 2024 Grants Program on Monday 17 June 2024. We will continue to review this over time and adjust as necessary to improve the program for the community. Applications are welcome from all members of Linux Australia. As in 2023, there are two different types of grants on offer this year. Project Grants provide funding for open source, open data, open government, open education, open hardware and open culture projects. Community Grants (introduced in 2023) offer funds to assist community groups rebuild and re-establish themselves following the interrupts of the last few years. We hope that the Community Grants enable groups within our community to revive past events or start something new that brings people together - in person, virtually, or both. The total funding available for all grants is $10,000. Applications close on 30 Nov 2024 or when the grant funds have been exhausted (whichever is earlier). Full details are given on the Linux Australia Grants page[1], accessible in the Member Area after logging in to the Linux Australia website[2]. This includes grant guidelines and an outline of the application process. Members of the Linux Australia Council[3] are happy to discuss grant ideas, provide guidance in the preparation of an application, and answer any questions there may be about the program. The Linux Australia Council looks forward to receiving and evaluating grant applications from the community. A major part of the work involves getting the OP-TEE FOSS security enclave working on the PinePhonePro and use fTPM (Firmware-backed Trusted Platform Module) on top of it to provide a hardware-enforced way to isolate and protect sensitive crypto operations in case of an attacker compromising the primary Linux system. In the end, a general PKCS#11 interface backed by the TPM is available for user space applications to delegate crypto operations. (OP-TEE also provides a native PKCS#11 interface, bypassing the TPM) With fTPM made available at an early boot stage, U-Boot the bootloader can measure the payloads (kernel, dtb, initramfs...) before continuing with the boot process, and the measurements can then be used to unseal key materials or be used by user space applications. The demostrations for the following use case on EO 2024 are available from my blog: - Access Measurements from Linux Userland [2] - Sign in to GitLab with fTPM-backed FIDO token [3] - fTPM-backed SSH Identity [4] The source code and building infrastructure are available on GitHub: https://github.com/ZhanYF/veritymobile Using that, it should be easy to build u-boot image you can flash to an sdcard and reproduce the demos. On the other hand, I also worked on virtualization-based isolation for untrusted workload, here is a demo for web browsing inside disposable, lightweight virtual machine: - Disposable Web Session [5] The source code for reproducing that is also on GitHub: https://github.com/ZhanYF/disposable-session Unlike the security enclave demos, you can run this one on any KVM-enabled system supported by firecracker (amd64, aarch64). Initially Russell and I used 2 PinePhonePros separately for different areas of work but due to design flaws[1] of the PinePhone backplates my PPP melted its midframe and I ended up using both PPP for my work. My slides for EO2024 is available here: https://segments.zhan.science/posts/everything_2024_gladstone_links/ On the side note, I'm still working on getting the LoRa backplate to work, the goal is to integrate the PPP with LoRa backplate to an active communication network (e.g. Mashtastic[6]) and add support for the PineDio USB LoRa adapter so that it can be further integrated into the Linux ecosystem. However the progress has been slowed down by some hardware problems. (e.g. the SX1262 LoRa chip used by PineDio has message corruption problem on both TX and RX, and backplate connection instability) At the current stage integration of the LoRa hardware to user-facing software is fairly primitive but it can be done as demonstrated by me during a previous Flounder meeting.
