From russell at coker.com.au Thu Mar 3 18:21:46 2022 From: russell at coker.com.au (Russell Coker) Date: Thu, 03 Mar 2022 18:21:46 +1100 Subject: [Linux-aus] efficiency of user groups Message-ID: <5679646.sC5gfIvSK5@xev> When running users' groups we don't want to waste effort reinventing wheels. Ideally we have people doing mostly what they are good at and what provides a benefit to users that can't be gained elsewhere. For the Flounder group I asked Linux Australia for list hosting because running one more list on the list server is negligible effort but running a separate list server is a moderate amount of work for someone. The LUV server uses Wordpress for the main site (with a bunch of plugins installed and maintained up to date), running 10 other Wordpress instances there would be almost no effort. If any other free software users' group needs a self hosted Wordpress installation I could easily set it up, root access is available to people who have a community reputation for being reliable. Also any other Apache/PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL site could be hosted without much effort. As an aside the LUV Wordpress setup includes a plugin to export iCal files of future meetings. Currently the LUV server runs a Matrix server which is minimally used by me and not used by anyone else (AFAIK, I gave a few people accounts but I don't think they use them). Running a Matrix server for such a small number of people isn't efficient. If there are other people in the community who want to use Matrix I can give out free accounts. Otherwise it might be best for me to get myself an account somewhere else and save the effort of running it. https://planet.luv.asn.au/ The LUV server has a chroot environment running Debian/Buster to run the Planet-Venus software for blog syndication. It has my copy of the Linux Australia syndication as well as another instance for my personal use. I could easily run dozens of extra instances with almost no effort. If anyone has a use for this then let me know. As an aside the planet-venus package is not supported in more recent versions of Debian. But Buster has support for another few years and I'll find some other syndication software in a few years time. The LUV mail server has a single-domain Postfix setup. Changing that to support multiple domains with web based administration wouldn't be that hard to do. If someone needs a couple of contact addresses for their free software group then I could set that up. LUV has a Wiki which isn't used very much. Would it make sense to change that to a free software groups in Australia and New Zealand wiki and give access to more people? That wouldn't be any more work for me than keeping it ticking over in it's current almost unused configuration. Does anyone else have server resources that can be shared with the free software community at negligible effort? -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/ From james at jamesh.id.au Fri Mar 4 16:37:29 2022 From: james at jamesh.id.au (James Henstridge) Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2022 13:37:29 +0800 Subject: [Linux-aus] efficiency of user groups In-Reply-To: <5679646.sC5gfIvSK5@xev> References: <5679646.sC5gfIvSK5@xev> Message-ID: On Thu, 3 Mar 2022 at 15:22, Russell Coker via linux-aus wrote: > Does anyone else have server resources that can be shared with the free > software community at negligible effort? Not a server resource, but here's some software I wrote that might be helpful to other LUGs that have been using BigBlueButton: https://github.com/plugorgau/bbb-render This takes the assets from a recording of a BBB meeting (webcam video, slide images, screenshare video), and combines them into a single video file suitable for archiving and uploading to services like YouTube. It also gives an opportunity to brand the video through a backdrop image (placed behind the slides/video), and title/end cards to bookend the presentation (which can either be static images or videos). The main reason for working on this was that we have been using another organisation's BBB instance, and wanted to make sure we wouldn't lose the recordings should that org stop maintaining the BBB server. We also wanted to have both our BBB and non-BBB presentations available at the same place, which means they need to be available in a lowest common denominator format (i.e. self contained video files). While we'd originally considered BBB for remote meetings during lockdown, it's turned out to be an acceptable method to stream and record in-person meetings too: 1. Have a video camera pointed at the presenter, hooked up via an HDMI capture device to the AV laptop. It'll look like any other webcam to BBB. 2. Hook the presenter's mic to the AV laptop. We're using a cheap mixing board with wireless mics that appears as a USB audio device. 3. Have the presenter log into BBB on their laptop. Either upload PDF slides into BBB and present directly, or start BBB's screen sharing and use virtually anything else. James. Some very good ideas. Thanks for floating them. Certainly as Free Software Melbourne / Free Software Australia we've struggled with setting up and maintaining group infrastructure, like mailing lists and websites. I'll bring this up with our FSA committee. There is some tension between sharing and maintaining autonomy, but I think that's resolvable with goodwill. More in a little while... ? Smiles, Les. Funding can be sought by members of Linux Australia for open source, open data, open government, open education, open hardware and open culture projects. Applications for funding will close at 23:59 on 4 September 2022 anywhere on earth with grant awards finalised by the end of September unless the grant funds are exhausted earlier. However, work funded through the program may continue past this date. Project timelines are negotiable, but in most cases projects should aim to be completed by the end of 2022. For more information and to apply, first log in to the Linux Australia website at https://linux.org.au/ Then click on the "Grants" banner or go to https://linux.org.au/grants-program/ If you have questions about the Grants program or would like to discuss ideas, please get in touch with the Linux Australia Council (council at linux.org.au). We look forward to reading your submissions. Mappings go from codes numbers to symbols to key functions. For example, if I have: xkb_keymap { xkb_keycodes { include "evdev+aliases(qwerty)" = 108; }; xkb_types { include "complete" }; xkb_compat { include "complete" }; xkb_symbols { include "pc+us+inet(evdev)" }; xkb_geometry { include "pc(pc105)" }; }; and run the following (sending the configuration straight to my X setup instead of compiling to a file) xkbcomp example.xkb :0.0 this maps my 108 keycode (labelled Alt on the right side of my physical keyboard) to the symbol PGUP, which in turn gets mapped by the include file to the function of page up (ie, if I press the right Alt it will now page up in my document), and has the side effect that the keycode 112 (labelled PGUP on my physical keyboard) is no longer mapped to anything Glenn -- pgp: 833A 67F6 1966 EF5F 7AF1 DFF6 75B7 5621 6D65 6D65 From russell at coker.com.au Mon Mar 21 16:09:48 2022 From: russell at coker.com.au (Russell Coker) Date: Mon, 21 Mar 2022 16:09:48 +1100 Subject: [Linux-aus] xkbcomp problem In-Reply-To: <0895f443-f813-676f-17e4-39f6f4902e9a@meme.net.au> References: <3508669.xcYpx6AGnn@xev> <0895f443-f813-676f-17e4-39f6f4902e9a@meme.net.au> Message-ID: <29428480.gVUZcTydkA@xev> On Sunday, 20 March 2022 23:57:45 AEDT Glenn McIntosh via linux-aus wrote: > On 20/3/22 20:47, Russell Coker via linux-aus wrote: > > = 108; > > = 134; > > = 180; > > > > I'm trying to use the above config file for xkbcomp to set PGUP and PGDN > > functions to the right "command" and "alt"/"option" keys on a Mac style > > bluetooth keyboard and to set the ESC function to the key that gives the > > ESC press if I hold down "fn" > > I'm not totally clear on what you are trying to do (as I don't have a > Mac keyboard), so bear with me if I'm telling you something obvious > here. I gave up on nVidia cards, they always had problems. Nouveau was never reliable for me and running the proprietary kernel modules was a security issue and would have restricted my choice of kernel. > All three have some form of 256GB solid state drive as a primary and a > One TB sata HDD. > > I tried running SUSE 15 on the Ryzon but it locks up occasionally and > forces me to use a hard reboot. Tried running Memtest86+? The machine I'm using now is a HP ML110 Gen9 and my wife's machine is a Dell T320. Using ECC RAM for everything that's important reduces the strange lockup issues. > Note: the message on the page says to get a later version of the browser > or restart it. I am running the latest linux mint AMD64 version on the machines. By fails to display I mean that I get a square outline with the message to either reboot the browser or update it (I'm using the latest version and rebooting it doesn't help). I have also noticed that it takes Linux Mint around 90 seconds after the logo comes onto the screen to boot to the login screen. Thanks for all the suggestions I am trying all of them.
