In this case the site was driven by software which was no longer
maintainable for various reasons. Closing the site was seen to be the most
appropriate solution to the problem given the changed dynamics of the web.
There was more to it than simply finding someone else to maintain the site.

As Russell Coker noted, he has put up a replacement aggregator which is
undoubtedly more maintainable than the old site. Hopefully this will prove
a useful resource for those who still utilise RSS/Planets.

A link to Russell's aggregator will soon appear on the old planet landing
page, along with any other similar resources offered by community members.
When LA Council discussed this last week it was felt that a link was the
most appropriate approach for now. This allows the farewell text to remain
visible and also makes clear that the resources being linked to are being
run by community members.

As the situation settles it may prove appropriate to revisit this and
perhaps consider an automatic URL redirect in future.
