Semantics on other aspects aside, can you please clarify what is open/free about Minecraft?
To my understanding:
 a) Minecraft is closed source Java;
 b) for any networked use (even LAN) every user is required to have a central Minecraft account, which requires a one-off payment.

Perhaps I'm missing something.
