I don't understand how either proposal differs significantly from what
we have now. In all seriousness, the call for miniconfs and selection
process only took a couple of hours, given its clamped on top of the
exist presentations calls.

The only real pain with miniconfs is the additional venue cost (two
extra days of what are in general expensive venues these days), and
neither of your proposals addresses that.
