Just a note from an immigrant: Australia is unnecessarily large. :)  
The drive from Sydney to Melbourne is over 1,000kms if you do it the  
quick way. Though, I still love driving around (and its a great way  
to see the country, of course). Just consider putting aside more time  
to do it than usual!

Driving from Sydney to Melbourne, I'd go via Canberra and Albury- 
Wodonga. You can then drive up the coast to Adelaide (from  
Melbourne). Once you start heading South though, it becomes a much  
bigger deal to try get north again (in order to get to Brisbane, for  
example).
