More likely, they just use whatever it came with; maybe upgrading to XP
or Vista or Tiger or whatever if they get convinced it's worth the $100
by some salesman.

For the ones that know enough to make a choice on their own, and who
aren't sharing a computer, I'd expect most of them already choose their
own OS. And then there's dual-booting, or running off a live-CD or
vmware image.
