Unfortunately the corporations who want to push this sort of 
legislation will sell it to the government as good for the 
economy and better for the people.  They'll find all sorts of
garbage arguments and the (non-technical) pollies who get to
yay or nay it will agree with them because the non-technical
public doesn't know what's good for them.

We are getting DMCA and DRM in some form whether we like it
or not.  Lobbying and petitions may have some effect to limit
the reach of such chilling technology (the basic assumption
that you're acting illegally until you prove you're not), 
but it won't stop them pushing it through in some form.
