Penguins might be too closely connected with Linux already, but Platypus is 
definitely edgy, and Perky has that same irreverent touch which makes 
Linux (and Tux the icon) so special.

Biologists get very nervous when asked to find a lineage for the platypus, 
so I guess you could make a case for an allusion to the fiaSCO through it 
as well.

Either way, you can tell the Ubuntu crew that Perky Platypus has now been 
suggested, and not by you, forward this to a list, whatever, and that 
independent public opinion (that's me!) is now on your side.

And tell Mr Shuttleworth "we" chose it to remind him of That Throne. (-:
