Just as the LSB tries to make things easier for the ISV, United Linux was
trying to make things easier for the hardware vendors.

Currently each hardware vendor has to test installation of each distribution
across all the hardware they wish to support.  This becomes a very big task,
and very expensive, which explains why companies like IBM and HP only want to
officially support Red Hat and SuSE/Novell.

United Linux was an attempt to fix this problem by using exactly the same
boot path/installation code for all distributions.  This would have reduced the
work tremendously, and allowed even more distributions (not less) to flourish.

The concept was good, but the implementation path was hurried, restricted and
poor.
