My DNSes (and corresponding Apache configs) routinely include the
basename, www, ww, wwww, xxx, xx and xxxx (those last three just to
keep the censors amused). This not only copes with turkeys adding
superfluous wubble-yoos but even with the odd typoe.
However, that's only a convenience. If the text (or hyperlink) says
lca2004.linux.org.au then they have no reason to prepend a "www."
(although some people do it so religiously you half expect the skies to
open and vomit fire on them should they one day forget to).
