Mood lifter for the day:
Gates said [the Japan's LDP that] he is willing to reveal the source
code '100 percent. Everything that we do is available.'
Wait a minute. Didn't another Microsoft senior executive state that
there is code in Windows that must never be revealed, because it is
so insecure that it would open up security vulnerabilities?
They probably did, but at least this way some one could fix the problems.
MS can't do it. :)
It was after talk of Linux surfaced that Microsoft offered to reveal
its source code.
Government officials say open-source systems have an advantage because
they allow a user to flexibly deal with security problems. Operations
of "black box" systems, however, are only known by the software company.
In addition, open-source systems do not require licensing fees and can
be modified because their open-source nature.
...so the Japanese seem to have a better handle on FOSS than the Aussies. (-:
