The assistance can cover things such as a ticket to the conference, travel, accommodation, or other costs that you would incur to attend. Lizzie is a lawyer, writer, and broadcaster with a keen interest in Open Source. She believes Open Source rebalances power in favour of the user by prioritising security by design, rather than imposing a requirement of trust in circumstances where users are not empowered. Lizzie's keynote will be an open discussion of the encryption laws in Australia and an insight into, what she likes to call, the sausage making factory that is Canberra. Delegates will gain an understanding of technological and digital rights issues are discussed in parliament and how introducing a Human Rights Act in Australia could have a positive impact in this space. A bit about Lizzie Lizzie O'Shea is a lawyer, broadcaster, and writer. She is a founder and board member of Digital Rights Watch, which advocates for human rights online. Lizzie also sits on the board of the National Justice Project, Blueprint for Free Speech and the Alliance for Gambling Reform. The breakfast gives women an opportunity to have a 'meta discussion' about diversity and the role women play in the LCA community. Attendees will also explore what our community could do to become a more inclusive place for women and other marginalised groups. Want to join the discussion? While the breakfast is free, tickets are limited to 50 seats. You can register for a ticket today via the registration dashboard at https://linux.conf.au/dashboard/. The breakfast primarily invites delegates from groups that are under-represented at the conference, including women, people from the LGBTQIA+ community, people with an impairment, and people of colour. If you are not a member of an under-represented group, you are welcome to come at the invitation of someone who is. This event has a strictly limited number of tickets available. --- Read this online at https://lca2020.linux.org.au/news/women-open-tech-breakfast/ From lca-announce at lists.linux.org.au Tue Dec 17 21:40:14 2019 From: lca-announce at lists.linux.org.au (linux.conf.au Announcements) Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2019 20:40:14 +1000 Subject: [lca-announce] linux.conf.au 2020 - Keynote announcement: Sean Brady Message-ID: Our third keynote speaker for LCA2020 is Dr Sean Brady. Dr Sean Brady is a forensic engineer, specialising in investigating the causes of engineering collapses and failures. He believes Open Source is important because it allows the best tools to get into the best hands to use them. Sean's keynote will look at how possessing expertise always seems like a good thing - something that makes us less prone to failure. In this presentation Sean will challenge delegates to dismantle how they use their expertise (regardless of profession), and show them that, as well as making us more specialised, it also dangerously narrows how we see the world. For delegates who believe that their technical expertise is their most important asset, he is going to make them have a deep rethink... A bit about Sean Dr Sean Brady is a forensic engineer who specialises in investigating the causes of engineering collapses and failures. Sean is interested in role played by human and system factors in failure, and he has recently completed a review for the Queensland Government into the causes of fatalities in the Queensland mining industry since 2000. He is a director of the Society of Construction Law Australia, a member of the Singapore International Mediation Centre's Panel of Experts, and a visiting lecturer at a number of universities.
