From lca-announce at lists.linux.org.au Thu Dec 14 10:04:27 2017 From: lca-announce at lists.linux.org.au (linux.conf.au Announcements) Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2017 10:04:27 +1100 Subject: [lca-announce] Diversity and Outreach grants now available Message-ID: The LCA2018 team are pleased to announce that we have secured Elastic.co as this year's diversity and outreach sponsor. There is a pool of funds available to assist attendees who may not otherwise be able to attend. These grants form a key part of our outreach and inclusion efforts at linux.conf.au. We want to make sure that as many people as possible can attend the event, regardless of financial ability or their background. Applications can be made here: https://linux.conf.au/attend/grants/ Grants may be for full or partial travel expenses, accommodation at one of our preferred accommodation providers, a ticket to the conference, or other assistance that helps overcome barriers to your attendance. The grant application process is open to everyone who needs financial assistance, but our budget is limited. We will give priority to applicants with a clear vision for what they want to achieve by attending linux.conf.au 2018 For reference, the form includes the following questions, which require 1-2 paragraphs to answer: * Why do you want to attend linux.conf.au? What experience do you have that you want to build on at linux.conf.au? * How would you and the communities you're a part of benefit from your attendance at linux.conf.au? Because travel to Australia from overseas can be expensive, we may only be able to provide limited travel assistance to applicants outside the Australia and New Zealand region. Applications are open now. Applications close on Sunday 24th December. We will award our first grants on Thursday 4th January. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: At Linux.conf.au Tim Ansell and a number of other people will be running a project style miniconf in which we help you "Create Hardware with FPGAs, Linux and Python". To participate in this miniconf you will need to purchase some hardware (AKA a ticket to the miniconf) which is available right now through the linux.conf.au website in the same location where you purchased your conference tickets. Other than that all you need is strong coding experience and be comfortable with C and Python. This ticket will include an FPGA board, some other hardware bits and pieces as well as lunch! Spaces are limited so you will need to get in quick if you want to be part of it. Tim has provided more information about the plans for this Miniconf below: > In 2005 the Love-Rusty 3000 was a state of the art crypto accelerator. > Developed by the infamous Robert Love & Rusty Russell, it was the talk > of Linux.conf.au [1] 2005[1]. > [Many intrepid kernel hackers spent much of the conference developing > a Linux driver]() for the [advanced feature set](). > > [1]: https://lca2005.linux.org.au/ [2] > [2]: https://linux.org.au/conf/2005/abstractb2b1.html?id=296 [3] > [3]: https://j.mp/lr3k-datasheet [4] > > Sadly in 2018 the hardware is no longer available, the innovative & > advanced feature set can no longer inspire new Engineers. > > This doesn't have to be the end thanks to the development of low cost > and accessible FPGA hardware. From lca-announce at lists.linux.org.au Tue Dec 19 10:08:49 2017 From: lca-announce at lists.linux.org.au (linux.conf.au Announcements) Date: Tue, 19 Dec 2017 10:08:49 +1100 Subject: [lca-announce] Call for volunteers Message-ID: Each year we call on volunteers to help make linux.conf.au awesome and this year is no exception! If you?ve volunteered before and want to do so again, all the details are at https://linux.conf.au/attend/volunteer -- If you haven't volunteered for the conference before or curious what it is all about then please read on. The core organising team are all volunteers themselves, and while we have gotten things to where they are right now we can?t run the conference on our own - particularly during the week of the conference itself. We need help to: * check attendees in when they arrive * operate AV equipment such as audio gear and cameras * direct people around the venue * ensure our rooms run to schedule * set up and pack down the conference Anyone who has been a volunteer before will tell you that it?s an extremely busy but worthwhile time. It?s rewarding to know that you?ve helped everybody at the conference to get the most out of it. There's nothing quite like knowing that you've made a difference. You don't just get to meet the delegates and speakers, you get to know many of them while helping them as well. You get a unique opportunity to get behind the scenes and close to the action. You can forge new relationships with amazing, interesting, wonderful people you might not ever get the chance to meet any other way. In return for your help we'll provide: * morning and afternoon tea * lunch * a clean shirt each day * and if you ask nicely we might even write you a letter of reference at the end of the week Depending on the number of volunteers and workload, we'll also try our best to schedule things to let volunteers go to their favourite talks. For more information, please visit https://linux.conf.au/attend/volunteer -- we have full details of what we need from our volunteers. We review and approve applications regularly. It will help us gauge both if we can do something bigger this year and if things go well, what we do next year. Thank! Please note that although we have not been able to find a sponsor, we are subsidising the cost of this childcare. The cost is only $30/day for the first child from a family and $15/day for any subsequent children in a family unit. The child minding facility will be located nearby to the conference in Mountain St and will be staffed by qualified professionals. The service will be available from 8am to 6pm each day. Payment can be made through our online system (https://rego.linux.conf.au/tickets/category/11), and you will need to also register your children with our provider, Charlton Brown - instructions are on the registration site. We do realise that this announcement has come very close to the conference - we were holding off in the hope that we would be able to secure a sponsor for this service. As it is we have made the decision to offer this at a subsidised rate. If you haven't secured your ticket for the conference yet time is running out to do so. We look forward to seeing everyone in just a few weeks! Regards Bruce Crawley, James Polley and the LCA2018 team
