Sys Admin, Full Time

Our well managed, well financed startup is looking for a full time Unix/GNU Linux systems administrator. Now don't worry, you won't be managing both at the same time. But here's why we mentioned it:

- We need someone who knows what a static/dynamic library is, what a debugger is, and knows how to install software from source in an intelligent way.
- You’ve heard about Free/Open/Net BSD. We'd love if you could find your way around this.
- We expect you to know how privilege separation works, filesystem permissions, why services running as root are bad for everyone's health, and how to secure things.

As for the "GNU/Linux" bit, it means we need someone who:

- Isn't stuck with any particular distro that avoids source code. Our systems are all deployed on Gentoo, so we expect you to be either quite familiar with it, or to possess enough knowledge to understand it in a very short period of time.
- Has a good grasp of networking (GNU/Linux firewalling and routing) and network services (like Apache, Lighttpd, Postfix, Samba, CUPS).
- Can handle kernel compilations, patching, and knows what it means when looking at a .config file.

In general, you have to be a Unix geek. You're happy to use it. You have experience with it, and you're willing to learn more.

Desirable:

- Knowledge of load balancers (HTTP, IPVS).
- Some Perl/Python/Bash programming skills.
- That you know enough to make suggestions on our deployment plans.

This is not a programmer position, but it wouldn't hurt if you could write code. The environment is very friendly.

This is a great opportunity to be part of one of the most promising startups in Australia and to further your skills. Already we have a sister company incorporated in Japan, 8 nationalities represented in our Sydney office, and an inspiring global feel.
