Project name: Open Laptop Project
Grant Type: Project Grant
Aim of the project: Laptops with open source software available through SA Makers
Purchase 6 laptops to be set up with Linux and other open source software, for use through SA Makers Inc in Makerspace Adelaide workshops, at Adelaide Repair Cafe, and at Tiwu Kumungka Repair Cafe.
Raise awareness and promote use of open source and creative commons software and licensing
Linux laptops with open source software will be available for use by Makerspace Adelaide and Repair Cafe volunteers, repairers, participants, and visitors
Laptops will be used for 2D & 3D course development, using Libre Office
Laptops will be used in 6 free Digital Fabrication Taster Workshops
6 laptops will enable us to hold digital design workshops for up to 6 participants, with devices available for all participants
We will hold
2 taster workshops in 2D drawing using Inkscape and GIMP for Laser Cutting
2 taster workshops in 3D drawing using Blender for 3D Printing
2 taster workshops in 2D & 3D drawing using Inkscape and Blender for CNC Router
Practice and promote inclusive open culture values
Having laptops available for use in Makerspace Adelaide workshops will open participation to more people (it will not be restricted to only people who have their own devices)
Places in the taster workshops will be prioritised for people who wouldn’t normally have access to this type of skill development, for example
People who are unemployed or need to re-skill to stay in the workforce, such as reskilling tradies
People receiving a Disability or Aged Pension
School leavers
The laptops will help us increase accessibility to digital design and digital fabrication
