Project name: RSEAA24 Accessibility Fellowship
Grant Type: Community Grant
Aim of the project: We would like to create an accessibility fellowship for RSEAA24, that is Research Software Engineer Asia Australia 2024 in September 2024. The majority of this community works in open source.
The idea of this accessibility fellowship is to encourage a blind or low vision member of our community or adjacent community to join RSEAA24 so that they can hold us accountable of how accessible the experience of the event really was.
This would be provided as an open access blog that could be put into figshare or Zenodo and would be provided as part of the event summary report.
It is hope that this type of fellowship could be replicated at other events to ensure that accessibility is considered with the most marginalised people in mind.
Estimated cost breakdown of the project: The idea would be for the fellow to get a free ticket to the event (that RSEAA24 would cover) as well as $250 AUD beforehand and $250 AUD when the final report is submitted. We would love for Linux Australia to cover the $500 AUD for the fellowship.
Project team details: Rowland Mosbergen is the co-chair and he would be the main person organising the fellowship.Rowland has experience in designing events and programs that are underpinned by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion principles as his work as Practical Diversity and Inclusion shows (https://www.practicaldiversity.org/). He has also experience in centring and working with people from marginalised backgrounds.
We would provide an EOI form and then identify someone who best represents the RSE community and has a screen reader that they can use during the event.
First Name: Rowland
Last Name: Mosbergen

A statement including a willingness to provide regular project updates on the project: We would be keen to hear about how we are progressing even before the event. We would hope the fellow would be able to post via their own Mastadon or through the RSEAA24 Mastadon account. We could provide these links to Linux Australia on a regular basis to show how the accessibility of the event is progressing. We would expect the report to be finished by the end of September or the first week of October.
