Hello everybody!
Cherie and the team for linux.conf.au 2015 Auckland are doing a great job in
preparing for next years conference, and we?re very much looking forward to
seeing you all there. As per our previous communications[0], Linux Australia
has moved towards a two year cycle for bidding to host linux.conf.au.
In order to provide enough time for possible bid teams to contruct their bids
for linux.conf.au 2017, we are now formally calling for Expressions of Interest
from bid teams to host linux.conf.au 2017.
The timeline for this year is as follows:
- March - Council seeks Expressions of Interest in running linux.conf.au
2017
- Late May - Formal Bids are requested to host linux.conf.au 2017
- June - Council works with Bid Teams to help them prepare their bids,
answering questions and providing guidance
- 6th July - Submission of formal bids closes
- July/August - Council clarifies any questions regarding the bids and reviews
them
- September - Council conducts Site Inspections with shortlisted Bid Teams
- October - Council decides on the winning city and informs the Bid Teams
- January - The winning bid is announced at linux.conf.au 2015
So, if you've ever sat in the back of an open source meetup or user group, or a
linux.conf.au talk, or had an informat chat with someone about running a
linux.conf.au, now is the time to put that idea into action!
If you were the person two seats back listening, go bug that person to put in a
bid!
What do I do next?
===============
The first thing to do is to send an email to council at linux.org.au to let us
know you are submitting an Expression of Interest. You should also CC
linux-aus at linux.org.au so that you can identify other people potentially
willing to help your Bid Team out.
Once you've done that here are two documents to help you get started:
* http://wiki.linux.org.au/Linux.conf.au_Bid_Guidelines
* http://wiki.linux.org.au/LCA_HOWTO
The first outlines what is required for the bid process, while the second give
a fairly detailed overview of the sorts of things you need to think about when
preparing to run an LCA, and provide example bid documents.
There is also a comprehensive Event Portal with lots of useful information on
how to run a successful event at
http://wiki.linux.org.au/Linux_Australia:Events_Portal
So go out, get your team together, talk to some venues/vendors and start
bidding to run the next awesome linux.conf.au!
This is your opportunity to do what you wanted to do at linux.conf.au, to add
something extra special to the conference, to have a say in the programme of
the conference and to show off your city and amazing organising skills. This is
something you will remember for a lifetime and gain life-long friends,
professional contacts and the experience looks amazing on a resume.
Not to mention, it's great fun to run!
Once you've finalised your bid document then please send to
council at linux.org.au and linux-aus at linux.org.au.
Warm Regards,
Joshua Hesketh
