I?m am interesting in trying Linux to see if I can escape the grasp of Apple which seems to want to own more and more of me. Either that or jump to the dark side. I inherited an old HP 8440p laptop which has Windows 7 on one partition and Ubuntu on another. In trying to access Ubuntu, I have ended up with the message 'Grub rescue' upon startup. I am unable to find the startup partition after following instructions obtained online and making several attempts to fix it. I have inserted an Ubuntu DVD and used it to start up the laptop. On more than one occasion it got as far as setting up wireless then stopped. Now it simply churns out lines of text ending for eg in - ?frozen? (timeout), status { DRDY } and print_req_error, Emask 0x4 (timeout) If there is there anyone with the time to assist me get the computer up and running I would appreciate it. My tel # is 63919288 (Evandale) or 0490121331 and I can travel. I look forward to hearing from anyone or getting advice as to where I might get help. Haven't, but I think there's some interest in doing/making/documenting construction of that sort of thing as a local project at Enterprize. Will definitely bring it up for discussion though! Here's the hardware I'm talking about: https://hdmi2usb.tv/home/ https://hdmi2usb.tv/faq/ https://code.timvideos.us Not as much fun as building your own but it is a thing that exists and if I was recording LUG meetings, this is exactly where I'd start - we used this hardware at LCA2017. A lot of the problems you'll encounter have been solved, so it would be useful at least as reference hardware for building your own. -- Craige -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... FWIW, I'll second this recommendation (and was going to suggest it until I saw Craige had mentioned it). Tim has been working on this stuff for ages and its now battle hardened. Just wish it existed 10 years ago when I needed it :) (I wonder if these days some other projects could be used as replacements for some of their custom components but investigating that would be an entirely different task) Karl. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... With this in mind I have set up a survey that people can fill out at: https://framadate.org/hobart-taslug For each day of the month you can select whether you can make it to meetings (green tick), can't make it on that day (red cross), or would be a maybe (amber tick in parens). I would be great if everyone interested in attending Hobart meetings could enter their preferences, especially if the current meetings day makes it difficult to attend. Please note that this survey is for informational purposes only and will only be one factor taken into consideration when determining the best meeting day going forward. SeeYa, John.
