Hi. Ignore previous email, it's a long-standing issue:
   https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab-ce/issues/25613

and I have a kludge workaround:
in Settings / General / Permissions Repository
set view and edit files in this project = Everyone With Access
even though I don't necessarily want Everyone to be edit my files,
( eg: my compositions:
   https://gitlab.com/peterbillam/pjb_compositions
)
Anyway, ignore previous email, sorry to bother the list,
