Cryptocurrencies in 2017 - Tuesday 18th July Message-ID: Hi everyone, Turns out I'm not available to run TasLUG this month on the third Thursday. Instead, I've been asked if I could explain this whole thing about Bitcoin and Ethereum to a few people, so I will give a presentation about this on Tuesday 18th July at our normal venue at Hobart Makers HQ. So if you're interested in crypto currencies but don't know much/anything, then come along and learn a bit about it and perhaps some other people can also share their experiences. When: Tuesday 18th July 2017 6pm Where: Hobart Makers HQ, Building 1831 St Johns Rd, New Town What: HODL! Cryptocurrenciees in 2017 Agenda: 6pm - Turn up, chat, mingle 6:30pm - Show and Tell, bring along your current project or gadget 7pm - Cryptocurrency presentation and discussion (to about 8pm) 9pm - Close up -- Scott Bragg From jsbragg at scriptforge.org Wed Jul 12 15:54:31 2017 From: jsbragg at scriptforge.org (Scott Bragg) Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2017 15:54:31 +1000 Subject: [Taslug] TasLUG Hobart Meeting 18th July - cancelled In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <25873995291a16631ec2e5003ee78e1f@scriptforge.org> Hi everyone (again), Seems I didn't consult the social calendar before checking this, but apparently there's a Govhack meeting on the same night. Because quite a few people that would normally go to TasLUG or Hobart Makers will be going to that meeting, I've decided to postpone that talk for another time, perhaps sometime in August. So, just to re-iterate, since I cannot make the third Thursday (which would be the 20th), and because the 18th is already a busy night, there is no TasLUG meetup for Hobart in July. Specifically I'll be introducing this ESP32[1] based Micropython[2] board which has a LoRa radio[3] and we will spend a couple of hours plugging in some sensors and collecting data via a LoRaWAN network. The workshop only has limited spots so we can ensure everyone gets a quality experience. If it proves popular we'll run another workshop later in the year or perhaps a follow up workshop with some more advanced code. You can register for the event here: https://hobartmakers.tidyhq.com/public/schedule/events/14276-connect-the-internet-of-things-to-wireless-networks You can choose either a ticket with or without the kit. If you opt to get a workshop only kit then there will be a microcontroller and sensors for you to use at the event, but the workshop + kit ticket means you get to take the board home with you afterwards. -- Scott Bragg [1] The same ESP32 microcontroller used in a certain hardware miniconf earlier this year [2] The same MicroPython that will be talked about in a certain Python based conference in Melbourne shortly [3] The same LoRa radio standard talked about at a certain amateur radio club presentation earlier this month From jkristen at theintraweb.net Mon Jul 24 16:13:08 2017 From: jkristen at theintraweb.net (John Kristensen) Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2017 16:13:08 +1000 Subject: [Taslug] Hobart non-meeting: Thursday July 27th - New Sydney Message-ID: <47d0a6ed-2338-4e58-4b67-345651893efa@theintraweb.net> Hello All, Unfortunately there was no meeting in Hobart this month, but a few people on the chats[1] were interesting in still having a (delayed) catch-up. For those that are interested, we will be meeting at the New Sydney on Thursday for something to eat and drink. When: from 6:15pm, Thursday 27th March Where: The New Sydney Hotel (87 Bathurst Street, Hobart) http://newsydneyhotel.com.au/ The eating and drinking are optional, so if you just wanted to pop in to say hello and have a bit of chat you are more than welcome to do so. I'll try to make sure I have a Tuz[2] or Mozilla[3] sitting on the table to make it easier for people to spot us. == LoRa/MicroPython Workshop == If you were interested in the LoRa/MicroPython workshop being run by Scott next month on 17 August, don't forget to sign up: https://hobartmakers.tidyhq.com/public/schedule/events/14276-connect-the-internet-of-things-to-wireless-networks SeeYa, John. We'll be using the opportunity to introduce newcomers to the concepts behind GovHack, how to go about participating in future events and what Free/Open Source Software applications and libraries might be useful tools to anybody looking to create something with one of the many datasets made available by State governments across the country.
