Things are starting to get warmer, and so TasLUG is venturing away from our usual meetup at the pub and going back to Hobart Hackerspace for their Wednesday open night. If you were part of the first ESP8266 Hackfest a few months ago you should bring your parts and/or project and we'll take it for another spin. A few of us have had some success with their NodeMCU devices. Mark has his integrated with the OpenHAB home automation system. Richard tied his directly to a 433MHz transmitter, and I connected up an ultrasonic sensor. We'll demo these projects and help everyone else still having issues getting their projects going. It will also be a great opportunity to mix with the Hackerspace members and find out what's going on at the space. ###Where Hobart Hackerspace - 2 St Johns Ave, New Town (NOTE: Not our usual location!) ### When WEDNESDAY September 14th, from 6pm (NOTE: not our usual Thursday!) ### Agenda 6pm onwards - ESP8266 Project Demos and tech support -- -- Scott Bragg From tim at wirejunkie.com Wed Sep 7 19:45:21 2016 From: tim at wirejunkie.com (Tim Serong) Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2016 19:45:21 +1000 Subject: [Taslug] Good home seeks free laser printer Message-ID: <20160907094521.GR16197@seshat.divinus.wirejunkie.com> Hi All, Usually this goes "Laser printer free to good home". I'm flipping that around, because we have need of a laser printer, if anyone has one they want to get rid of. It doesn't actually have to be free (gratis), but I do need something I can print to from Linux boxen, via either USB or network. Parallel won't work, as it's probably going to be hanging off a laptop which doesn't have such a port. Also it needs to be something for which toner cartridges are still available ;) Thanks for any assistance (feel free to email me offlist). Cheers, Tim From jsbragg at scriptforge.org Tue Sep 13 20:55:07 2016 From: jsbragg at scriptforge.org (Scott Bragg) Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2016 20:55:07 +1000 Subject: [Taslug] Reminder: Hobart meeting is tomorrow at Hackerspace Message-ID: Hi everyone, Just a quick reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday is the day for Hobart's September meeting. We'll be at the Hobart Hackerspace from 6pm onwards. We'll probably order in some pizza. Bring your ESP8266 projects and we'll take them for a spin. If you're having problems getting something working, the hive mind will help figure it out. -- -- Scott Bragg From jsbragg at scriptforge.org Tue Sep 13 21:02:42 2016 From: jsbragg at scriptforge.org (Scott Bragg) Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2016 21:02:42 +1000 Subject: [Taslug] Peter Billam is in hospital Message-ID: Hi everyone, Just a quick note to let people know, especially those who turn up to our Hobart meetings, our friend Peter Billam is in the RHH with some pretty serious issues. Selected from over 400 submissions, this year?s linux.conf.au programme features 84 talks and 6 tutorials. Our diverse presenters, coming to Hobart from all around the world, directly shape the projects and topics they?re presenting about. They?ll help you understand the tools, the technology, and the issues that are shaping the Future of Open Source. You can find our full list of accepted presentations at https://linux.conf.au/schedule/general-sessions/list For those who want to know what?s happening close to the hardware, we have presentations covering upcoming features of the Linux kernel, new approaches in networking, and stories from people who?ve been making and breaking the latest new and unusual hardware. If you?re a developer, we?ll be covering the latest developments in Open Source browsers, new tools for targeting mobile platforms, war stories from developers working with emerging programming languages, and how design and usability shapes the applications we develop. Sysadmins and devops can look forward to talks about the future of tools that make systems run better, including talks on automated builds, configuration management, new tools for working with containers, and package management. We also have a strong line-up of talks looking into community, policy, and business issues in Open Source. We?ll look at how Open Source is playing a more important role in Government, how businesses can better participate in Open Source, and how Open Source can provide better communities for users and developers. And of course, linux.conf.au will feature its usual fare of people doing cool stuff with Open Source Software and Hardware: from cars, to planes, and even into space. Our tutorials will provide you with practical experience in a diverse range of topics in Free and Open Source Software. This year we?re featuring tutorials on devops with SaltStack, home automation, the Rust programming language, .NET on Linux, Linux containers, and GPL compliance. If you want to find out about these talks, tutorials, and more, check out our full list of accepted presentations at https://linux.conf.au/schedule/general-sessions/list You?ll emerge from linux.conf.au 2017 knowing where the world of Open Source is heading, with skills and knowledge to be a part of the Future of Open Source. We expect to announce ticket sales and accommodation options shortly. == About linux.conf.au 2017 == linux.conf.au is a community-driven conference about the Linux operating system and the vibrant ecosystem of Free and Open Source Software that has grown up around it.
