We interrupt our normal programming to bring you something different,
somewhere else on a different day.
THE SOMETHING DIFFERENT: is a hardware hackfest using NodeMCU; a very
cheap ($12) open-source firmware development board featuring the
venerable ESP8266 chip. These are an 80MHz microcontroller with
built-in wifi and you can program the microcontroller in Lua, Python or
Javascript.
The plan for the event is to build up a device which can remote control
some wireless power points (all parts included) so you can control power
to your things. Because it's a microcontroller, you can code logic so
that power is applied when a certain temperature is reached, or a
certain light level is present etc. The options really are endless.
On the night, from 6:30pm, several TasLUG regulars will give short
presentations on assembling the hardware, flashing the chip and writing
code for the ESP8266. Following on from that there will be an all in
session where everybody assembles the kit of supplied parts into a
working prototype. The cost is going to be about $50, payment being
cash on the night.
SOMEWHERE ELSE is Hobart Hackerspace, 2 St Johns Ave, New Town TAS 7008.
THE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DAY is Wednesday 20th July (so it won't be our
normal 3rd Thursday of the month, it's the 3rd Wednesday this time).
RSVP: Please reply to this email to me (jsbragg at scriptforge.org) by 10th
July so we can approximate numbers and to have pre-purchaced enough
hardware to go around.
