Hi Brianna, Bianca and other members of our Media and Communications
Subcommittee,
I'd like to introduce Alec Sloman who is a Linux and Open Source
Evangelist with 99 Designs in Melbourne.

Would it be OK if I added Alec to the Media and Comms Subcommittee
mailing list?

Kind regards,
Kathy

Hello,

Thanks Kathy for introducing me. As mentioned, my name is Alec Sloman
and I've been following a couple of your mailing lists for a few
weeks. I joined up today and in response to Kathy's email I mentioned
that I am interested in Linux advocacy.

While I'm not sure what it entails exactly, I can say that I love
Linux and what it represents. In my daily life, I'm a Developer
Advocate at 99designs in Melbourne. I organize events, write about
technology, and generally help our technical team with professional
development. I'm also a developer and general tinkerer with experience
in OS X desktop development, web development (which is where I
developed Linux chops). I've been using computers forever it seems. I
just love them.

My main interest in FOSS is the role it could play in conservation. I
have a futurist's view of a solar/distributed power grid powering
UNIX-powered perma-culture homesteads, and ultimately that's what I
want to work on. For now, I work on big HTTP infrastructures instead. :)

Anyways, that's just a little about myself and my interests. I
contacted Kathy because I want to get involved in Linux advocacy, but
I don't really know where to start. Perhaps you will have some idea of
things I might do in 2014.

A couple of things I can offer straight off the bat: like I mentioned,
I work at 99designs and we are generally very indebted to the Linux
kernel and FOSS in general. This year we are aiming to use our new
office in Richmond as a forum for the technology community in
Australia, and to that end I can offer an excellent venue for events.
Attached is a picture of our presentation space, complete with pulpit,
projector, and inflatable Llama.

Actually we have an interesting meetup coming up soon:

http://www.meetup.com/Infrastructure-Coders/

We want to host as many of these things as we can. It doesn't matter
if it's just about Linux in general, we are interested and want to get
involved.

Also, we can offer free design contests on 99designs to Linux
Australia if you're interested.

Beyond what is possible with my work at 99designs, I'd really love to
start a discussion about how I can get involved more personally. As
silly as this might sound, I truly believe that free software is
critical to the future of our planet. Computers are absolutely the
most powerful general-purpose tool we've ever had, and if I can help
put that power into more hands and inspire them to do good, then I
will feel like I'm doing the work I was meant to do.

I look forward to starting this discussion! Here's to a great 2014.

Regards,
Alec
