<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Hi
All:</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Firstly lugs.org.uk
does appear to be set up very similar to what LA has done from what I've seen of
their site, except the UK have done it in a more polished manner than what we've
done here in Australia. Some of the UK lugs do have a website, and some
others don't have this or maybe they just aren't listed. LA can take some
more effort in improving the website and trying a little harder to keep it
updated, and this won't cost them much more in funds either!</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2
face=Arial></FONT></SPAN> </DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Meetings getting LUG
organisers together should have a slightly different focus to standard UG
meetings. I'm actually having a little bother trying to correctly
understand where the conversation below is supposed to head as its also
confusing. If LA don't want to give funds for LUG organisers to have a f2f
meeting, then I won't be loosing any sleep over it, I'm more than happy to pay
my way - any part funding from them would be considered a bonus, but realise
that they don't have heaps of funds available.</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2
face=Arial></FONT></SPAN> </DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>F2F LUG organisers
sure should have a get together sometime just before or during LCA events,
seeing that a number of us are there, this would be a wasted opportunity if this
wasn't used in such a fashion. Having a second meeting say around the
middle of the year would also be a great idea and should be well worth good
consideration. It doesn't have to be something over the top, it can be as
basic and practical as we want it to be, hence it doesn't have to cost the earth
to run either, if there are a few sponsors than great, if not then so be it -
the event can run either way. These also don't all have to be in Alice
Springs they can be and should be in other places too.</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2
face=Arial></FONT></SPAN> </DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Also I am aware that
there is quite an active LUG up there in Alice Springs, why can't you guys up
there bite the bullet and put a bid in for LCA sometime soon? LA are
trying to find more regional towns and centres to put bids in for this great
event, some have really great things on offer for such an event - so why not
have a tender??</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2
face=Arial></FONT></SPAN> </DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Alice Springs isn't
hard to get to either, you can fly from most capital cities from around
Australia (except for Hobart, unless they have changed this recently?), train
from Adelaide or Darwin, and various coach services too. Driving
would be probably not wise in solo due to the way the Stuart Highway
is, but could be tackled in small groups of drivers rotating around, and taking
decent breaks, etc. Transport shouldn't be an issue for people to get to
Alice Springs.</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2
face=Arial></FONT></SPAN> </DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Anyway we should be
definately trying to work this through some more, so that irrational decisions
can be avoided as much as possible.</FONT></SPAN></DIV>
<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2

<DIV><SPAN class=296045106-29092010><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Look forward to
hearing from people soon. Enjoy the rest of your day

<DIV>This bit is easy.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>I want an australian equivalent of <A
href="http://lugs.org.uk/">http://lugs.org.uk/</A> - it seems incredibly
wasteful for each LUG to manage their own hosting; but the hosting options LA
currently offers don't quite match what I want for SLUG.</DIV>
<DIV>I want to start discussion about why LUGs exist as incorporated entities
(where they do exist that way), instead of subcommittees of LA</DIV>
<DIV>I want to talk to other UGs about what meeting formats they use, how they
entice people to participate in the community.</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<BLOCKQUOTE

class=gmail_quote>to get out of a face-to-face meeting? </BLOCKQUOTE>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>That's the tricky bit; I don't see how a f2f meeting directly aids any of
this. It offers less tangible benefits - I know some people from some LUGs,
but most of the names in #linux-aus-lugs are just names, with maybe a static
photo attached. Any of these discussions would be easier to have if I knew the
people I was talking to better, but I don't think being together while having
the discussion is necessarily necessary</DIV>
<DIV><BR></DIV>
<DIV>In some specific cases - say, a hack weekend to get lug-in-a-box to where
I want it - there's some amount of utility in having participants physically
together, but I can't convince myself the cost is always justified.</DIV>
