Hi all,
Following on from the conversation on the #linux-aus-lugs channel, one
perennial topic is the idea of a face-to-face meeting. We normally try to
organise one at the Linux Conference Australia every year, but it would also
be good (IMO) to meet up maybe once a year at another time - the general
consensus I think has been somewhere around June or July. This would be a
chance for one or two of the organisers from each LUG to meet up and discuss
what they, together, can do to improve their LUGs - and Linux and FOSS in
Australia as a whole.
The opinion from Linux Australia, as far as I can see, is that they would be
happy to pay for some of the travel expenses for the group as long as they see
some (reasonably direct) benefit from the meeting. A set of things to discuss
would be a good start here - or a set of things we want to achieve in such a
meeting. It might be hacking on Zookeepr or setting up the LUG-in-a-box
package. We might aim to produce a set of materials for new LUGs or more
ideas for existing LUGs to reach out and get new members. Anything, really.
As far as funding goes, my thinking is that the attendees should pay an equal
price for travel, with Linux Australia making up the difference - that way the
people from Broome don't have to pay too much to attend and it be biased in
favour of the Adelaidians :-) And in my view attendees should pay something -
though it's a great chance to collaborate I wouldn't want it to be a burden on
LA or seen as a junket.
Anyway, what do people think?
Have fun,
Paul
