---------------------------------
(20:01:45) KatteKrabtop: hello everyone
(20:02:03) Tutigan: hello
(20:02:22) touchwood: Hi there
(20:02:25) noisymime: Evening
(20:02:51) KatteKrabtop: I'm not at my usual machine - so can't access
the agenda
(20:03:02) KatteKrabtop: can someone take a look on the list and copy
paste it here?
(20:03:37) touchwood: “The topic for #linux-aus-lugs is: Are you on the
mailing list?
(20:04:27) elspeth left the room (quit: clarke.freenode.net
irc.freenode.net).
(20:04:34) elspeth [n=elspeth at webserver.suqueensland.org.au] entered the
room.
(20:04:42) jhesketh: Hi there
(20:04:51) KatteKrabtop: hey jhesketh
(20:04:53) ***jhesketh has very little time and may come and go as he
pleases
(20:05:08) KatteKrabtop: jhesketh: so be it! ;)
(20:05:31) vk5fnet: wasn't in the post to linux-aus =/
(20:05:45) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: last week or the week before...
(20:05:45) vk5fnet: the agenda, that is
(20:05:55) KatteKrabtop: not today's reminder
(20:05:55) vk5fnet: im prolly not on that list..
(20:06:00) KatteKrabtop: hmm
(20:06:01) vk5fnet: is it inthe list archive?
(20:06:05) noisymime: Agenda...
(20:06:06) KatteKrabtop: I should be able to get the arcvhive yeah
(20:06:07) noisymime: 1. LA and lugs making life easier: tabling of a
few ideas and general
(20:06:08) noisymime: discussion. (Stewart Smith, President of Linux Aus
will be joining us)
(20:06:09) vk5fnet: can you get to the list archive?
(20:06:10) noisymime: 2. Regional Delegates Programme (renew / revise /
redevelop)
(20:06:11) noisymime: 3. Casual Chat Times / Official Meeting Times
(20:06:11) KatteKrabtop: aaah thanks noisymime
(20:06:16) KatteKrabtop: right
(20:06:32) KatteKrabtop: well stewart isn't here - so let's jump to
number 2
(20:06:49) KatteKrabtop: does anyone here remember the RDP?
(20:07:03) vk5fnet: no, not really
(20:07:09) Tutigan: no
(20:07:24) KatteKrabtop: so this is going back a while now
(20:07:30) vk5fnet: i think it ran ing 2004 and 2005
(20:07:32) KatteKrabtop: last time it ran was for LCA2005
(20:07:40) KatteKrabtop: *nod* and possibly 2003 as well
(20:08:01) KatteKrabtop: back then there was a sponsor for it
(20:08:12) KatteKrabtop: and it stopped when the sponsorship stopped
(20:08:21) vk5fnet: i believe sun sponsored it in 2004
(20:08:26) Tutigan: so we are looking for sponsors?
(20:08:30) vk5fnet: not sure of the others
(20:08:32) KatteKrabtop: but... the key bit that concerns lugs is how to
select candidates
(20:08:39) KatteKrabtop: yeah sun sponsored it
(20:08:48) KatteKrabtop: not so much that we're looking for sponsors
now...
(20:08:59) KatteKrabtop: but ideas on how we might run it...
(20:09:06) vk5fnet: but getting a process together
(20:09:08) KatteKrabtop: what process would we use to select people...
(20:09:10) KatteKrabtop: nomination
(20:09:12) KatteKrabtop: s
(20:09:16) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: yeah.
(20:09:50) KatteKrabtop: perhaps some criteria... for selection?
(20:09:52) KatteKrabtop: young people?
(20:10:04) KatteKrabtop: people who've made a contribution in some way?
(20:10:09) Tutigan: what is the RDP exactly? excuse my ignorance.
(20:10:26) KatteKrabtop: RDP = regional delegates programme
(20:10:49) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: sorry - was listed in the agenda
pasted by noisymime :)
(20:11:04) vk5fnet: KatteKrabtop: perhaps the best place to start is;
what is the goal of RDP?
(20:11:09) KatteKrabtop: so - anyone have any thoughts?
(20:11:15) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: good question.
(20:11:33) vk5fnet: from that you can define how you want to get there
(20:11:42) KatteKrabtop: the end result... is that people from across
australia - get travel assistance and free rego to go to LCA
(20:12:05) KatteKrabtop: I have no idea what the originl goals might
have been
(20:12:11) vk5fnet: a bit like Googles diversity program ?
(20:12:12) KatteKrabtop: but it did seem to be young ppls
(20:12:27) Tutigan: so people from remote regions? or from smaller
communities?
(20:12:34) noisymime: I think it'd be good to look closer at non-young
people
(20:12:37) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: yeah = I think the diversity thing was
an attempt at reviving the rdp to some extent
(20:12:49) Tutigan: noisymime: what age group?
(20:12:59) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: yeah - smaller communities, remote...
but also - just across the country
(20:13:04) dgeary2 [n=dgeary2 at turing.une.edu.au] entered the room.
(20:13:12) KatteKrabtop: I think there was one from each state?
(20:13:18) KatteKrabtop: but am not 100% sure
(20:13:30) KatteKrabtop: older ppl?
(20:13:34) KatteKrabtop: seniors?
(20:13:51) noisymime: We get a few regulars at BLUG in the 40+ age group
who have a professional interest in linux, but usually work for small
companies that are unlikely to send them
(20:14:01) KatteKrabtop: I think nz team are looking at something for
pacific islanders too
(20:14:10) vk5fnet: i don't think age is as important as the candidates
being able to communicate back to their community
(20:14:12) touchwood: link to RDP info 2005
http://lists.linux.org.au/archives/aslug/2005-February/000140.html
(20:14:14) KatteKrabtop: noisymime: good consideration
(20:14:22) KatteKrabtop: touchwood: nice find.
(20:15:01) KatteKrabtop: touchwood: u from aslug?
(20:15:09) touchwood: Klsug
(20:15:15) touchwood: sorry kslug
(20:15:34) KatteKrabtop: touchwood: that's right!
(20:15:40) Tutigan: what about the people not from a LUG, being too far
from a LUG to be able to participate properly?
(20:15:41) KatteKrabtop: anyone know if aslug is still active?
(20:15:46) KatteKrabtop: me just curious :)
(20:16:02) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: also a good consideration...
(20:16:21) KatteKrabtop: cast a net to people who can't normally get
involved in lugs. nice
(20:16:37) Tutigan: katteKrabtop: exactly my point
(20:16:49) vk5fnet: a LUG provides a means to vette an application. but
yes its important to get folks with out local community, so to speak
(20:17:00) KatteKrabtop: yeps.
(20:17:11) KatteKrabtop: so...
(20:17:31) vk5fnet: perhaps the R in RDP mean really regional for next
time?
(20:17:56) vk5fnet: given that well, wellington is a little further a
field ... for more AU types ;)
(20:19:25) KatteKrabtop: right.
(20:19:43) vk5fnet: just a suggestion.
(20:19:59) KatteKrabtop: what would lugs need to help support the
programme?
(20:20:02) vk5fnet: this is why you need to define what the RDP *is*
(20:20:17) noisymime: Are applications from other countries
(specifically NZ for next year) accepted?
(20:20:35) KatteKrabtop: noisymime: at the moment there isn't really
anything in place
(20:20:55) KatteKrabtop: this discussion... is to see if lugs would be
interested in participating in some kind of revival
(20:21:02) vk5fnet: how about X possies from AU and Y possies from NZ?
(20:21:11) KatteKrabtop: so... defining the goals / thikning of
criteria / etc
(20:21:19) Tutigan: and sponsors?
(20:21:35) KatteKrabtop: brainstorming possibilities... so we can then
say to linux-aus and LCA... yep we lugs reckon it's good, and here's
some idea
(20:21:36) KatteKrabtop: s
(20:21:44) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: and sponsors.
(20:21:51) KatteKrabtop: or fundraising ideas in general
(20:22:35) KatteKrabtop: because perhaps local fundraising efforts could
be useful too
(20:23:00) KatteKrabtop: rather than one sponsor for everything....
local communities could get a local sponsor to send someone to the conf.
(20:23:05) Tutigan: LUG's can run fundraising events for their RDP rep?
(20:23:18) vk5fnet: thats nice =)
(20:23:19) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: is a possibility yeah...
(20:24:41) KatteKrabtop: aah - got a text from stewart - something's
come up and he can't make it. apologies
(20:25:07) vk5fnet: perhaps we could chat about what the RDP delegate
does at the conf? how can they be involved at the conf to raise
awareness of X topic?
(20:25:14) KatteKrabtop: so... does someone want to dig around and see
what they can find out about the old RDP?
(20:25:31) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: yeah - that sounds interesting.
(20:25:33) vk5fnet: who ran it in 2005?
(20:25:42) cafuego: KatteKrabtop: I was planning on bringing this up
this coming weekend as well; in terms of having LCA itself fund spots.
(20:25:46) noisymime: vk5fnet: I think that's a great idea
(20:25:54) KatteKrabtop: well the email touchwood found - originated
from rusty
(20:26:13) KatteKrabtop: there must be more info lurking about in lists
and on websites and stuff...
(20:26:22) vk5fnet: KatteKrabtop: i assume it was LCA committee back
then ?
(20:26:25) KatteKrabtop: we needses a bit of digital archeaolgy.
(20:26:32) KatteKrabtop: some new ideas would be good too...
(20:26:44) KatteKrabtop: cafuego: yeah cool.
(20:27:06) KatteKrabtop: cafuego and I are heading to Wellington on the
weekend for the LCA handover meeting.
(20:27:19) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: I dunno...
(20:27:28) vk5fnet: KatteKrabtop: how about some suggestion from the
LCA2010 crew as to how they could fit a couple of delegates into their
program?
(20:27:53) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: into the conference program? or their
pacific islander thing?
(20:27:57) vk5fnet: from that we could work backwards a bit to help set
a selection ?
(20:28:03) vk5fnet: KatteKrabtop: yes.
(20:28:24) KatteKrabtop: 'k - I'll see what I can find out from the
welly team :)
(20:28:26) vk5fnet: i don't know, im sure theres something that you can
get RDP delegate to help with ...
(20:28:56) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: you mean that they should work as
vollys during the conf?
(20:29:18) vk5fnet: getting them involved, um anything around the key
notes, where, the RDP delegate from XYZ will present ...
(20:29:23) vk5fnet: no
(20:29:26) KatteKrabtop: aaah.
(20:29:29) KatteKrabtop: yep gotcha now
(20:29:38) vk5fnet: make sense?
(20:29:43) KatteKrabtop: yep
(20:29:45) cafuego: maybe in the form of a miniconf slot? or a BOF?
(20:29:54) KatteKrabtop: delegate present on why they're worthy? ;)
heheh
(20:29:57) vk5fnet: not slave labour =) thats what volly are for ;)
(20:30:00) KatteKrabtop: lol
(20:30:05) vk5fnet: KatteKrabtop: that to.
(20:30:25) vk5fnet: you know how there was the community awords, one
could present that ?
(20:30:30) KatteKrabtop: so - anyone prepared to volunteer to see what
they can dig up about RDP of the past and forward to the lugcomms list?
(20:30:34) cafuego: I was told the 2010 team have some plan involving
RDP, so we'll know more by the next meeting.
(20:30:52) KatteKrabtop: and generally post some more thoughts there too
(20:30:57) vk5fnet: i will find out what i can from the 2004 crew
(20:31:04) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: cool. :)
(20:31:14) vk5fnet: might be a few week though
(20:31:24) KatteKrabtop: vk5fnet: no hurry at this point I don't thikn.
(20:31:30) vk5fnet: k
(20:31:33) KatteKrabtop: ok...
(20:31:35) cafuego: as long as it's done by tomorrow
(20:31:39) KatteKrabtop: so... let's see what was next.
(20:31:41) vk5fnet: sure thing
(20:31:45) KatteKrabtop: casual chat times...
(20:32:08) KatteKrabtop: I think we might need to throw that to the
mailing list... but there are at least 3 ppl I know just can't make this
slot...
(20:32:28) KatteKrabtop: and someone I think maybe noisymime...
suggested we should have a co-ordinated casual chat session on channel
(20:32:35) Tutigan: to be able to accommodate everyone would be
impossible
(20:32:40) KatteKrabtop: just a time we agree to turn up and just hang
out...
(20:32:50) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: yeah exactly.
(20:32:57) KatteKrabtop: so perhaps a couple of times...
(20:33:18) KatteKrabtop: or maybe a daily timeblock...
(20:33:21) cafuego: Actually, some news from the LUV trenches
(20:33:25) KatteKrabtop: where people are likely to be online...
(20:33:42) cafuego: we hired a venue this past saturday and asked
newbies to turn up and tell us their probblems
(20:33:53) KatteKrabtop: lol
(20:33:54) cafuego: then we pointed and laughed
(20:34:10) cafuego: But seriously. We promoted it as a'beginners
workshop'
(20:34:14) KatteKrabtop: yeah the beginners thing went well... we got 30
people there.
(20:34:17) cafuego: and about 30 ppl came - it was great'
(20:34:18) KatteKrabtop: was amazing
(20:34:26) KatteKrabtop: and lots brought laptops
(20:34:34) cafuego: s/laptops/netbooks/
(20:34:38) KatteKrabtop: and just huddled together asking questions -
showing each other stuff.
(20:34:42) KatteKrabtop: was quite cool.
(20:34:48) KatteKrabtop: we'll be doing it every month.
(20:35:06) KatteKrabtop: helloooooo out there?
(20:35:16) ***KatteKrabtop ponders heading off to the couch to watch
telly.
(20:35:22) Tutigan: lol
(20:35:57) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: which lug you from?
(20:36:02) Tutigan: we need to work out a regular time for meetings. are
we doing it monthly/fortnightly with casual weekly/fortnightly catchups?
(20:36:12) KatteKrabtop: this is the regular slot
(20:36:16) KatteKrabtop: last tues of the month
(20:36:16) noisymime: I thought the idea sounded great. I'll have to try
harder to make the next one :)
(20:36:31) KatteKrabtop: but a casual thing could be weekly
(20:36:40) KatteKrabtop: or alternate fortnight to the formal meeting.
(20:36:41) cafuego: noisymime: Try to get to one before the footy starts
again .. ;-)
(20:36:44) Tutigan: KatteKrabtop: I'm not, per se. I'm 600km from the
nearest LUG.
(20:36:44) KatteKrabtop: noisymime: cool!
(20:36:58) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: so you're a single unit lug then? ;)
(20:37:03) Tutigan: lol. yup
(20:37:39) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: are there other computer / web /
standards ppl in your area? maybe you just need to rally a broader bunch
of geeks?
(20:37:44) Tutigan: trying to get some mates together to make an
informal one here, maybe get a closer one up once every few months or
something
(20:37:56) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: sounds cool :)
(20:38:14) KatteKrabtop: so... weekly chat time?
(20:38:23) KatteKrabtop: when is good for people? later at night?
(20:38:28) KatteKrabtop: 9ish?
(20:38:32) vk5fnet: Tutigan: which part of the country you in ?
(20:38:35) KatteKrabtop: 8ish?
(20:38:36) Tutigan: WA
(20:38:43) vk5fnet: KatteKrabtop: later is better
(20:38:51) Tutigan: KatteKrabtop: 8 - 9 sounds good
(20:38:52) noisymime: agreed, 9 is good
(20:38:53) vk5fnet: Tutigan: ok cool.
(20:39:08) KatteKrabtop: 9 eastern time... is 7 in WA right?
(20:39:22) Tutigan: yes
(20:39:30) vk5fnet: 2030 adelaide
(20:40:12) Tutigan: KatteKrabtop: when I say "8-9", I mean eastern time
(20:40:17) KatteKrabtop: shall we tentatively suggest 7WA - 8QLD -
8.30SA - 9East pm on a Monday?
(20:40:18) vk5fnet: Tutigan: does that mean you are 600km out of perth
area ?
(20:40:27) Tutigan: approx
(20:40:35) vk5fnet: k
(20:40:45) Tutigan: closer to 500 i think
(20:40:58) vk5fnet: south ?
(20:41:11) Tutigan: north
(20:41:15) vk5fnet: ah ok
(20:41:24) KatteKrabtop: WA is huge
(20:41:30) Tutigan: lol. yup
(20:41:30) vk5fnet: yep
(20:41:46) KatteKrabtop: so does anyone have any other stuff they wanna
bring up/
(20:41:47) KatteKrabtop: ?
(20:41:48) cafuego: pinnacles-ish-ish?
(20:41:55) KatteKrabtop: mmm pinnacles
(20:42:28) Tutigan: pinnacles? they're about 200 km from Perth
(20:42:58) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: somewhere near broome?
(20:43:01) KatteKrabtop: ;)
(20:43:09) KatteKrabtop: ibn between broome and the pinnacles
(20:43:27) Tutigan: just out of Geraldton.
(20:43:33) KatteKrabtop: aaah :)
(20:43:43) Tutigan: moving into it within a week though
(20:44:30) vk5fnet: Tutigan: you know there was a serious bit to get an
LCA to
(20:44:34) vk5fnet: broome
(20:44:57) Tutigan: Broome's a bit far from me
(20:45:02) vk5fnet: s/bit/bid/
(20:45:13) vk5fnet: =)
(20:45:59) KatteKrabtop: http://luv.asn.au/node/76 <= 2004 rdp info on
the LUV website
(20:46:05) KatteKrabtop: google knows everything
(20:46:31) KatteKrabtop: would anyone object if I called the meeting
done?
(20:46:43) KatteKrabtop: feel free to keep chatting though
(20:46:55) KatteKrabtop: just that I'm sitting on floor at my parents
place
(20:46:56) Tutigan: no objections from here ;-)
(20:47:02) KatteKrabtop: not super comfy
(20:47:07) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: :)
(20:47:24) KatteKrabtop: ok - I move we close the meeting... is there a
2nd?
(20:47:30) cafuego: aye
(20:47:37) KatteKrabtop: all in favour?
(20:47:41) cafuego: aye
(20:47:44) KatteKrabtop: aye
(20:47:46) KatteKrabtop: heheh
(20:47:58) Tutigan: aye
(20:48:09) KatteKrabtop: that's good enough for me...
(20:48:10) vk5fnet: cheers =)
(20:48:12) KatteKrabtop: lol
(20:48:15) Tutigan: is there anyone from PLUG here? (Perth LUG)
(20:48:48) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: I don't think anyone is here from plug
tonight
(20:48:53) cafuego: not in a waking fashion anyway
(20:49:03) KatteKrabtop: Tutigan: are you on the mailing list? you could
shout out to them there.
(20:49:13) Tutigan: oh well... I'll have to keep hammering at their
mailing list
(20:49:32) cafuego: there'll be meeting attendance records in the list
archives
(20:49:39) cafuego: with nicks and lugs
(20:49:46) vk5fnet: eep
(20:49:58) cafuego: vk5fnet: I know what you did last summer...
(20:50:02) KatteKrabtop: g'nights all.
(20:50:07) vk5fnet: doh
(20:50:09) vk5fnet: night KatteKrabtop

(20:50:29) vk5fnet: =)
(20:50:31) Tutigan left the room.

(20:51:43) touchwood: Catch Ya!
(20:59:59) cafuego: ~.
(21:09:11) touchwood left the room (quit: "Chatzilla 0.9.75.1 [SeaMonkey
